An above ground swimming pool pump is an important component for the proper functioning of your pool. They are designed to provide water flow circulation for filtering, heating and sanitsation. They filter the water and remove debris and other contaminants. Pool pumps are also used in sanitation applications to maintain the cleanliness of the pool.
Different types of pool pumps are designed for specific applications and you have to make sure that you have selected the right one for your needs. For example, if you want a pump that provides better filtration then you should go with a sand filter or a cartridge filter pump. And if you want to use it for sanitation purposes then you should go with a sand filter salt sanitation pump.

The most common pump types are sand filter pumps, and cartridge filter pumps:
- Sand filter pumps work by filtering the water through a series of sand bags or cartridges. A sand filter pump is a type of filter for pools that uses a sand filled drum to filter the water. The sand particles act as a natural filter media which removes bacteria, algae, and other harmful substances from the water.
- Cartridge filters use filter cartridges that trap debris and contaminants in a porous material. Cartridge pumps are also used to clean pools but they use various types of cartridges to remove impurities from the water. Cartridge pumps can be made out of polyester, polypropylene, or polyethylene plastic. They can be either single-use or multi-use cartridges depending on their construction materials and the manufacturer's design specifications.
Sand filter pumps are more expensive than cartridge filter pumps, but you don’t have to change the filters (replacing sand once every 5 years is fine) and sand filters are going to beat cartridge filters for efficiency every time.
