How to Use Swimming Pool Chlorine
Swimming pool chlorine is the most commonly used sanitising agent to keep your pool or spa fresh and clean by breaking down impurities and bacteria. For healthy bathing, chlorine needs to be added until it is present as 'free chlorine'. This is the stage reached after all the impurities have been broken down and further chlorine has been added.
- Ideally, the amount of free chlorine should never fall below 1 part per million (ppm). For most private pools, we recommend a free chlorine level of between 1 and 1.5 ppm.
- For larger, frequently used pools, we recommend 2 to 3 ppm.
- Please note: Always use chlorine test strips before use for safe bathing and your pool's dosing requirements.
What Type of Swimming Pool Chlorine Do I Need?
Pool chlorine is sold in various forms; liquid, tablets, or granulated.
- Pool chlorine granules are fast dissolving and used to give you an instant boost to your chlorine levels and are often used in conjunction with tablets.
- Pool chlorine tablets are slow dissolving to give you a gradual release and ongoing protection for 5 to 10 days depending on the water flow over the tablet.
- Liquid chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite, often referred to as Hypo) is a non-stabilised pool chlorine shock product, usually used in larger or commercial pools.
