Hot Tub Balancing

Hot Tub Water Balancing - Balance your spa water for better bathing

Establishing and maintaining the correct water balance is important for a number of reasons:

  • Hot tub chemicals efficiency
  • Bather comfort
  • Protection of hot tub and spa equipment
  • Water quality and appearance
  • Makes it easier and less time consuming to look after your hot tub

Some people believe that keeping the correct pH is all that is needed to achieve the correct water balance. However, this isn't the case and although pH is important, there are other factors that also need to be considered.

Balance your hot tub's Calcium Hardness

Calcium hardness (sometimes referred to as total hardness) is the measure of how hard or soft the water is. The level will vary depending on the water supply where you live. Some northern regions have very soft water and some southern regions have very hard water. The hardness depends on the amount of mineral salts dissolved in the water. The more there are the harder it is.

Balance your hot tub's Total Alkalinity

Total alkalinity is a measurement of the water's ability to resist pH change. If the total alkalinity is low, then the pH can fluctuate which makes it difficult to change, and will continue to rise. A high total alkalinity can also lead to the formation of bicarbonate scale on the hot tub surfaces, within the pipework and internal equipment.

Balance your hot tub's pH

pH is a measure of how acidic or how alkaline your water is. A good level is just above neutral at around 7.2 to 7.6. The scale runs from 0 to 14, where 0 is very acidic and where 14 is very alkaline. Proper balancing with protect the hot tub and internal equipment from aggressively corrosive water and will be more comfortable for bathers.
